Electric restructuring bill stalled

March 16, 1999 By admin

A bill in the legislature which will affect every Iowan’s electric bill may be tabled until next year. The measure re-structures state regulation of electric and gas utilities, allowing businesses to compete for customers. House Republican Leader Brent Siegrist of Council Bluffs is giving the bill less than 50/50 odds of becoming law this year. The bill cleared the House Commerce Committee last Friday on a party-line vote. Siegrist says republicans will try to answer the criticisms from democrats. The bill willgive electric and gas companies the ability to compete for your business in the same way telephone de-regulation unleashed competition for your phone business.
