March 17, 1999 By admin

The class 3A quarterfinals opened on Tuesday at the boys state basketball tournament. Third ranked Western Christian of Hull and seventh rated Carroll Kuemper hooked up in a classic. Kuemper took a nine point third quarter lead but Western Christian roared back for a 72-67 victory. Justin Van Meeteren led Western with 18-points. Also in class 3A, fourth ranked Davenport Assumption rolled to a 73-48 victory over Grinnell. Eric Doster poured in 30-points as eighth ranked Algona downed second ranked Pella 47-43. In class 2a, Fort Dodge St. Edmond hit 11 three pointers in a 76-68 victory over Cascade. Jack Brownlee led the way for the Gaels with 22-points, including four-of-six from three point range. The game included a scoring controversy. With about six minutes remaining Cascade standout Craig Callahan was whistled for what appeared to be his fourth foul, but the official scorer said it was his fifth. Over the protest of coach Al Marshallit was ruled that Callahan had fouled out of the game.
