There’s a major change today in the vote in Polk County to raise the sales tax by a penny to fund school improvements. It was announced late Tuesdaynight that the measure had passed by just 12 votes, but an error in the voting was discovered today that reversed the result and gives the measure approval by 38 votes. Polk County spokesman Phil Roeder says things won’t beofficial until other ballots are counted Thursday. Supporters of the measure mounted a major campaign that included phone calls and advertising. Theywere celebrating today what they thought was a victory until being informed of the mistake. Roeder says the intense campaign magnifies the counting mistake. Over 66-thousand voters or 30-percent turned out to vote. If the vote stands as a defeat, it would be the third time a sales tax increase has failed in Polk County.
