Semifinal round action is underway at the boy’s state tournament. There will be a new champion in class 1A. Second ranked Newell-Fonda outscored Rock Valley 12-2 in the third quarter then held off a rally down the stretch to edge the defending champion rockets 65-60. Drake bound center Jason Sarchet led the way for Newell-Fonda, scoring 35 points on 13 of 17 shooting. Newell-Fonda will play Des Moines Christian for the 1A crown. The lions made only three of 20 shots in the second half and saw fourth ranked Preston come back from ten points down in the fourth quarter to send it to overtime before coming up with a 48-42 victory. Senior guard Jon Moore’s steal,lay-up and free throw with 50-seconds remaining in overtime broke a 40-all tie. Preston had a chance to win it in overtime, a length of the court pass was caught by Johnny Driscoll with point-eight seconds remaining but the lay-up at the buzzer rolled off the rim.
