Republican presidential candidate Steve Forbes says he won’t accept federal campaign dollars, which enables him to spend without limits in Iowa and other states. Forbes, publisher of the magazine which bears his name, has a personal fortune which he used to bankroll his last campaign. Forbes says he’s actively seeking donors. During his 1996 campaign, Forbes called for abolishing the federal tax code and establishing a uniform 17-percent “flattax” on income. Forbes says his issues haven’t changed, but his timing has. Polls show Texas Governor George W. Bush and former American Red Cross president Elizabeth Dole as the front-runners for the Republican party’snext presidential nomination, but Forbes says the polls are meaningless. Forbes made his comments during a news conference at the Iowa capitol.
