Deaths bring safety warning in Iowa City

March 24, 1999 By admin

Iowa City residents are being warned not to walk alone at night until a double-killer is caught. Police say the bodies of two women found last weekin a burning apartment were killed before the fire, which was set to cover the slayings. Chuck Green is director of the University of Iowa’s Public Safety Division and he recommends students heed the warnings too. Green says the U-of-I has long offered a program called “Safe Walk” whichprovides free escorts for anyone on campus. While some students may feel more comfortable carrying mace or pepper spray, Green says that’s not a goodidea because they can be taken away and used against you. The body of 29-year-old Laura Watson-Dalton of Creston was found in the burned apartment Friday. The other victim was too badly burned to identify.
