Special Olympic athletes compete for state finals

More than 750-disabled Iowans took part in the Iowa Special Olympicsregional compeition in Des Moines today and all were looking to advance tostate compeition. Spokeswoman Deb Deardon-Eldred says competitors in trackand field and swimming ranged in age from eight to 80.Deardon-Eldred says similar regionals take place across the state of Iowaand while the goal for the athletes is to advance to the state games thereis a sense of accomplishment from all the athletes who take part.Deardon-Eldred says there are a number of different events in the track andfield division.The Special Olympics Summer Games are in Ames May 20-22.
