Freshman considers college choice

April 21, 1999 By admin

Mason City freshman standout Jeff Horner is nearing a decision on hiscollege choice. Horner will choose between Iowa State and Iowa and becomethe youngest player ever to commit to one of the state’s division onebasketball programs. Horner visted Iowa State at the beginning of April andmade a visit to the Iowa campus last weekend. Iowa coach Steve Alford couldnot comment directly on the Horner situation but did say while it is rare, there are times when a ninth grader can be projected as a division oneplayer.A few years ago Damon Bailey committed to Indiana as an eighth grader.Alford says when players commit that early, it is because they grew upwanting to play for that school. The Hawks have signed one recruit this spring, 6-6 swingman Rob Griffin fromSoutheastern Community College in Burlington. Alford says that may not bethe end of it and they would like to sign a big player, though at this latestage, there are not many left.
