Legislature nears adjournment

April 29, 1999 By admin

This could be the final day of the 1999 Iowa legislature. Final action is due on a few items, such as a bill which provides propertytax reduction to Iowa landowners as well as legislation which extends73-million dollars of income tax cuts. The bugaboo at this point isgambling legislation. The House and Senate are quibbling over whether therace track/casinos in Council Bluffs, suburban Des Moines and Dubuque shouldget a tax break. And, the finishing touches are being made on the more thanfour-and-a-half Billion dollar state budget. Once lawmakers leave DesMoines, Governor Vilsack will have 30 days to review bills and decide whathe’ll accept — and what he’ll veto.
