New "cat house" opens in Des Moines

May 1, 1999 By admin

It’s not your ordinary “cat house.” Iowa’s largest zoo is opening a newexhibit today. The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines is debuting its 1-point-6million dollar “Great Cats” exhibit. It replaces a smaller cat exhibit that’dbeen in the same spot almost since the zoo first opened.Zoo administrator David Allen says the new exhibit features Siberian tigers,African lions and snow leopards — all of which are very rare animals. The modern exhibits allow zoo visitors to get within an inch and a half ofthe big cats and remain safe — as the glass is that thick. Allen says greatcare has been taken to make the great cats feel at home. While most pet cats hate the water, Allen says tigers and jaguars love it.The grand opening is at 10 a-m.
