D-O-T tries new workzone safety campaign

The Iowa Department of Transportation is unveiling a new campaign today toget motorists to be more careful in construction zones. Traffic SafetyEngineer Mark Bortle says radio and TV adds that begin running today toutthe theme: “Get the picture, listen to the signs.”.Bortle says the campaign is a joint effort with 21 other states and theFederal Highway Administration. Bortle says it’s the first time states havecombine resources to develope a campaign.Bortle says the D-O-T is changing the work zone signs. They now feature anew type of flourescent material that is easier to see.He says the had used the same material in the signs for seven years and thenew material is 12 times more bright.Bortle says they are starting the new awareness campaign now to getmotorists ready for the memorial day holiday — the first big driving holidayof the summer.
