U of I leads new breast cancer study

The University of Iowa is leading a national study to test breast cancermedication. Study coordinator Mary Spaight says this is a followup study toone done with the drug tamoxifen. Spaight says the tomoxifen study provedthe drug was effective in some cases.The new study uses a drug called Raloxifene.The research project is called “Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene” or”STAR.” Spaight says they’re looking for study volunteers with specificcharacteristics.Spaight encourages any woman who may be interested to call the University.The numbers to call are 319-356-2778 or 800-237-1225. Spaight says there are400 STAR satellite research centers across the country that will enrollwomen. In Iowa there are centers in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Ames,Waterloo, Davenport and Clinton.
