U-of-I studies new attack on breast cancer

May 28, 1999 By admin

A University of Iowa study shows a new attack on the most advanced form of breast cancer may be more effective than the standard treatment. Professor Roger Gingrinch says the treatment uses four drugs and a bone marrow transplant. Gingrinch says the study included 158 women with the cancer. The study showed 53-percent of the women using the therapy survived five to nine years. Gingrich says there now needs to be more study that compares this treatment to the standard treatment. He says the number of women in the study is small — but opens a ray of hope. Gingrich says they hope to now move forward and do more testing of the new treatment approach.
