Fire destroys restaurant at State Fair

A 35-year-old family business located at the State Fair Grounds burned tothe ground this morning. Des Moines Fire Chief Ron Wakeham says two peoplewere in the Steer and Stein restaurant working on a pop machine triggeredthe fire. Des Moines, Altoona, Pleasant Hill, Bondurant fire departments were calledto the scene. Wakeham says there were no injuries.The Steer and Stein is located just east of the Grandstand whichsuffered minor heat damage.Restaurant owner Stan Kranovich says his father opened the Steer and Steinin 1964 in a tent. He later built the building that burned. The restauranthad been operating during last week’s Pork Expo. The family hopes to be backin business again in time for the State Fair in August.
