This Saturday is the deadline for registering to vote in the June 29thspecial election in which Iowans will decide upon two proposed amendments tothe state constitution. One amendment limits state spending to 99 percentof tax collections, so some money is saved. The other raises the number oflegislators who can enact a tax increase to 60 percent. Donn Stanley, thestate’s deputy commissioner of elections, says most county courthouseswill be open on Saturday. If you’re registering by postcard, it mustRECEIVED by your county’s auditor by Saturday. You may also register tovote through Friday at Driver’s License stations. Stanley says there’s beena surprising number of requests for absentee ballots.Stanley says it’s unusual in this kind of one-issue election.
