Law forces two mayors to step down

A new state law has forced two northeast Iowa mayors to step down. ShellRock Mayor Bob Greenlee and Hudson Mayor Dan Brobst are both retiring fromstate jobs soon, but neither can collect their state pension unless theyresign from public office. Apparently no one knew the consequences of thenew law until recently. Greenlee was elected as a write-in candidate over ayear ago, but recently found out he must resign.Greenlee wants to continue to serve as Shell Rock’s mayor, and wonders whylegislators enacted the law.Greenlee says the law requires him to step down by July 1st, but he can seekre-election in November. Representative Bill Dix, a republican from ShellRock, hopes to get a judge to overturn the law.
