Ceremony to honor Iowa veterans

A military ceremony near Atlanta, Georgia, next week will honor three menwho died in the Civil War, fighting under the Iowa banner. Members of the 5th Iowa Cavalry were tearing up a vital railroad line in Alabama in July 1864. Confederates attacked and killed two Union troops andwounded several, one of whom died a few days later. The dead were buried inMarietta, Georgia, in numbered graves as “unknown” soldiers. Historians usedcasualty lists, maps and other records to determine their indentities, 135years later. The ceremony next Friday is to unveil three new headstones withmilitary honors. Though they served under Iowa’s flag, none of the threewere from Iowa. They’re James Harris of Bailey’s Creek, Missouri; David Sageof Belleview, Nebraska; and William Britt — an Irish immigrant.
