June 24, 1999 By admin

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is calling for tougher laws to keep guns out of thehands of young people following this week’s slayings of two Iowansvacationing in Texas. Harkin says there are “too many guns out there.”The bodies of Todd and Stacie Bagley of Ottumwa were found in the trunk oftheir burned car Monday at Fort Hood, Texas. They’d been carjacked, forcedinto the trunk, shot & the vehicle was set on fire. Harkin blames the easyavailability of weapons on the senseless violence.Four Texas teenagers are in custody, ranging in age from 15 to 19. Theeldest of the two face federal carjacking charges and if convicted, couldface the death penalty.Congressman Leonard Boswell joins Harkin in calling the crime “shocking.” Boswell says it highlights the need for policymakers to address youthviolence.
