Sara Lee will close New Hampton plant

Officials at Sara Lee headquarters in Chicago announced today the Sara Leebakery plant in New Hampton will close in December. Workers and cityofficials in New Hampton have failed to find a buyer for the plant. MaryRosonke is a spokesperson for the union representing most of the company’s625 employees. She says workers have been preparing themselves for thisannouncement. Rosonke says the unions and employees are hopeful a new industry can belured to New Hampton to fill at least some of the void of the Sara Lee plant.Sara Lee Vice President Jack Shewmaker says the company wants to help NewHampton to soften the economic blow.Sara Lee is moving the New Hampton operations to other plants in NorthCarolina and Michigan.
