Some Iowa counties are raising the pay for precinct poll workers as itbecomes harder to fill the jobs. Cerro Gordo County auditor Ken Klein sayspoll workers are paid minimum wage while precinct chairpersons are paid 5-50an hour. For the general election in 2000, Klein says the county will needat least 200 people to work the polls and says it will be tough.Klein says Johnson County supervisors recently gave poll workers atwo-dollar-an-hour raise to eight dollars an hour.Other county leaders say there’s little interest among young people to stepinto poll positions, traditionally held by retirees.
