Kossuth County to vote on tax a third time

July 15, 1999 By admin

A petition calling for a THIRD election on the local option sales tax inrural Kossuth County has put plans for a new jail & a swimming pool on hold. The cities in Kossuth County passed the tax in March & rural voters passedit in June. The petition calls for a third vote to change how the money isused — putting it all toward tax relief instead of toward a combination oftax relief and the jail & pool projects. Floyd Bode (boad’-ee) of theKossuthCounty Taxpayers Association wants the jail paid for with part of thecounty’s current five-million dollar investment in area banks. The County Attorney says the petition DOES have enough signatures to callfor another vote, but only in the rural areas. It’s unclear if the entirecounty, too, may have to return to the polls.
