Group wages campaign against violent video games

July 16, 1999 By admin

An Iowa City-based watchdog group is waging a campaign that asks video storesto treat violent video games like pornographic films.Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence is sending letters to 18 storesaround Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo/Cedar Falls. The group’sexecutive director, Dennis Smith, says violent games should be removed orrestricted for adults-only.Smith compares today’s graphic violence-packed video games to the shootinggallery games he played as a child — where the player hunted ducks orbears that’d simply fall over when shot.Smith is also calling on parents & educators to go to malls and other placeswhere games are sold or rented and challenge store managers to offer lessviolent products — especially for younger children.
