State and Federal officials at odds over water designations

July 16, 1999 By admin

The U.S. Evironmental Protection Agency is proposing two-hundred-65 lakes, rivers and streams be added to the Iowa’s “impaired waters” list. The IowaD-N-R disagrees, saying only eight need the classification of “impaired.” Jack Riessen (reese-un) of the Iowa D-N-R says the difference in numberscould be because there are no written regulations.Being on the “impaired waters” list doesn’t necessarily mean the water ispolluted. Many of these waters have high levels of chemicals.Riessen says there is controversy about removing waters from the impairedlist once they are on.Water quality checks must be made every two years in Iowa.
