"Iowa One Call" could prevent disasters

A gas line was severed at the Des Moines Airport yesterday, forcing a90-minute evacuation of the terminal. Craig Walter, administrative directorof “Iowa One Call,” says ANYONE who plans to dig trenches or holes issupposed to call “Iowa One Call” 48 hours before any digging.The construction company working on the Des Moines airport expansion couldface a fine of up to 10-thousand dollars if it failed to check with “IowaOne Call” before digging. Walter says “Iowa One Call” received 300-thousand phone inquires last year.You can reach “Iowa One Call” to check for buried utility lines by calling1-800-292-8989. The hotline is answered 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week.
