August 8, 1999 By admin

Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer is critical of competitorGeorge W. Bush’s education plan. Bush would deny federal funds to schoolswhich are failing with students. The money would be made available toparents in the form of “vouchers” for private education or tutoring. Bauersays Bush is wrong to give public schools three years to clean up their actbefore the voucher system would kick in.Bauer supports vouchers — immediately. Bauer says vouchers will letparents band together to press for improvements in their local, publicschool.Bauer, an undersecretary of Education in the Reagan Administration, willunveil his own detailed education plan within the next eight weeks. Bauermade his comments during a stop at Johnston High School. He stopped inCedar Rapids this afternoon, too.
