September 22, 1999 By admin

The University of Northern Iowa is joining other universities in the statewhen it comes to attacking myths about student binge drinking. JulieThompson of the U-N-I wellness department says they’ve instituted what iscalled a “social norms” program. The program shows students how the actual amount of drinking on campus islower than what they think. Students then will feel less pressure to drinkto fit in. Thompson says a survey shows 70-percent of students at the CedarFalls campus typically have four or fewer drinks. The campaign will continue throughout the school year. Iowa StateUniversity, Luther College and Central College are some of the other Iowaschools using this type of program.
