FDA rule should boost use of soybeans

A change is coming next week in how food products are presented, which couldmean a big boost for Iowa soybean growers. The F-D-A is going to allow foodcompanies to say that consuming soy protein helps reduce coronary heartdisease.Kirk Leeds the executive director of the Iowa Soybean Association expectssoy to become much more prominent for consumers now that the F-D-A is givingthe green light to allowing the health claims.To make the claim, food products will have to contain at least six and aquarter grams of soy per serving and be low in fat, cholesterol and sodium.Leeds expects a dramatic impact for soybean farmers with the consumption ofsoybeans projected to double within five years.This year’s Iowa soybean harvest is expected to be the largest ever — witha prediction of 520-million bushels.
