Gore says farm bill not enough

October 22, 1999 By admin

Vice President Al Gore says the nearly nine-billion dollar farm billsigned into law today is inadequate — and a symptom of what’s wrong withthe so-called Freedom to Farm Act. Gore blames the Republicans for what he calls poor farm policy.Gore, a democrat, says the assistance is not targeted to farmers who need it the most, aspayments are not based on this year’s production and most of the money endsup in the pockets of bigger rather than smaller operations. Gore says evenwith its shortcomings, the aid will help.Gore says it’s time to re-write the Freedom to Farm act and get rid of itssystem of a fixed-level of federal farm payments.Gore made his comments during a telephone conference call with reporters.
