Fire hits State Capitol again

The state capitol was evacuated mid-morning because one of five domes on thebuilding caught on fire. Des Moines Fire Chief Ron Wakeham says his crewshad to punch holes into the copper dome to put the fire out.The same thing happened last Thursday, but the fire was quickly put out byworkers. Today’s blaze was fanned by high winds, and the statehouse wasevacuated. Statehouse facilities manager Mark Willemsen will meet with theconstruction workers to ensure it doesn’t happen again.Willemsen says there’s not much damage inside the capitol building. Thelarge central dome of the capitol which is covered with gold was not damagedby today’s fire.
