UNI public safety officers want to carry guns

Students and University of Northern Iowa officials are discussing the issue of arming public safety officers on campus. A noon-time forum was held today, another is scheduled for the same time tomorrow to talk about giving guns to campus security officers. U-N-I public safety director Dean Shoars.Iowa State University public safety officials have asked their governing board for permission to carry guns, citing recent armed robberies in the “Campustown” area of Ames. Shoars isn’t taking that formal step, yet, for the Cedar Falls campus.A U-N-I professor who gained national attention for her criticism of campus-based R-O-T-C programs is leading opposition to the arming of campus security guards.
