Farmers urged to check grain for spoilage

November 10, 1999 By admin

Not everyone enjoys the warm weather — officials at a northwest Iowa grain elevator recommend farmers check their bins for spoilage due to the recent unseasonable heat.Harry Bormann, grain merchandiser for the West Bend Elevator Company, says the wide temperature fluctuations over the past few weeks could be causing problems for grain stored in bins.Bormann says farmers need to check their grain bins once a week to see if there’s any crusting or moisture accumulating at the top. He says they can also check for the smell of spoiling grain.Temperatures in some parts of the state this week have been 25 degrees warmer than normal.
