State tries to block Publishers Clearing House settlement

November 16, 1999 By admin

Iowa is joining twenty other states in trying to block a proposed settlement of a class action lawsuit against Publishers Clearing House. The lawsuit claims Publishers Clearing House took advantage of consumers with the promise they would win big money. Bob Brammer, a spokesman for Iowa’s Attorney General, says the proposed settlement doesn’t provide enough compensation.Brammer says if the settlement isn’t thrown out, Iowans and others could lose their chance to get proper compensation from the company.Brammer says Publishers Clearing House is trying to portray the settlement as a good thing, but the 21 state Attorneys General disagree.Brammer says a Federal District Court is holding a formal hearing on the request to throw out the settlement. He says a decision could come early next year.
