ISU Shutterbug Captures Insect Images

December 24, 1999 By admin

An Iowa man’s photos of exotic subjects are featured in calendars and hundreds of publications each year. But he’s not snapping shots of sexy swimsuit models. Marlin Rice’s pictures are of corn borers, caterpillers and other various types of insects. The Iowa State University entomology professor started shooting photos of bugs to help supplement his talks on pest control. Rice takes his camera with him on trips and has taken pictures of exotic insects in far-away places. He says he can’t really be compared to those photographers who shoot scantily-clad women on the beach. He doesn’t get negative feedback by those who say he’s exploiting his subjects, but there is some controversy over his method for shooting bugs. Rice says unlike human subjects, he sometimes has to drug a bug to get it to sit still for the photo.
