History expert advises Iowans to look for statesmen

January 12, 2000 By admin

A national history expert says Iowans need to cast their caucus ballots carefully this month. Dr. J-Rufus Fears is Professor of Classics at the University of Oklahoma and he’s visiting Iowa today. Dr. Fears says people should strive to find and back the statesmen among ordinary politicians.Dr. Fears says statesmen like George Washington, Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt stand apart from the others because of their morality, vision and honesty. Even though he doesn’t mention any modern-day politicians under the category of “great statesmen,” he says there are some around.Fears is troubled by the growing number of Americans who say they just don’t care about politics or politicians and refuse to vote.Dr. Fears addressed a group of executives and stockholders of a grocery store chain in Des Moines earlier this afternoon.
