January 27, 2000 By admin

The Iowa Hawkeyes rallied to a five-point lead, but failed to hit a field goal in the last five and a half minutes in falling to Illinois 69-58 in Iowa City last night. The Illini outscored Iowa 18-2 in the last seven minutes of the game. Coach Steve Alford says you can’t do that and win.Iowa was outrebounded 43-29 by Illinois.Alford says his team did play well the first 15 minutes of the second half, giving up only 11 points, but failed to show the toughness needed down the stretch. Dean Oliver led the Hawkeyes with 13 points, Jacob Jaacks had 12 and Ryan Luehrsmann was the only other Iowa player in double figures with 10.
