Marriage bill won’t make it down the aisle

February 17, 2000 By admin

A bill which would give couples the option of entering into a “covenant” marriage — which would be harder to dissolve — failed to pass a Senate committee. By signing the “covenant,” couples would undergo 12 hoursof pre-marital counseling — and if they ever sought a divorce, they’d haveto undergo two years of counseling before it could be final. Senator JeffAngelo, a republican from Creston, believes covenant marriage could be oneway to reduce the divorce rate. The vote on the bill was seven “yes” and four “no” — but it needed eight”yes” votes to pass the committee.
