Forecast misses mark on amount of snow

February 18, 2000 By admin

The monster snowstorm didn’t quite have the bite forecasters first thought it would have. Most of Iowa is waking up to a blanket of white this morning, but the big blizzard that was predicted ended up being much less beastly.National Weather Service meteorologist Shane Searcy in Des Moines says snowfall totals are ranging as deep as nine inches in some areas but in most places are only from two to four inches. Up to a foot had been forecast. Searcy says the snow is still coming down, making travel a challenge.Southeast Iowa is still under a winter weather advisory but all of the other warnings have been cancelled. Searcy says the weekend forecast calls for improving conditions. The Highway Patrol warns motorists to proceed with extreme caution as most highways & interstates are 50 to 100 percent snow & ice covered.
