February 22, 2000 By admin

The U-S hasn’t drafted soldiers since 1973, but the Selective Service System is still in place, costing 24-million dollars a year. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says the time may be well overdue to shut down the draft.Iowa Congressman Jim Nussle, of Manchester, says the service is too expensive and ineffective. He sponsored a bill last year to cut off funding. There are 29 draft boards in Iowa & nearly two-thousand nationwide which have been practicing for decades on how to handle the appeals of draftees.
