Troopers to begin using trigger locks

February 28, 2000 By admin

The roughly four-hundred uniformed troopers in the Iowa State Highway Patrol will receive trigger locks tomorrow. Patrol spokesman Sergeant David Garrison says when a trooper’s off-duty, the locks are to be placed on their “service weapon.”Garrison says off-duty troopers have already been storing their guns in cases which have a combination lock.Last week, Republicans in the legislature refused to take up a bill which would have required trigger locks on all guns sold in Iowa. Retired state trooper Clel Baudler, who’s now a legislator, worries troopers who are threatened in their homes will be endangered because of the time it takes to remove a trigger lock. Supporters say it will increase home safety.
