Sioux City seeks to get minorities involved in census

March 1, 2000 By admin

Census officials in Sioux City are making an extra effort to be sure the city’s large minority population completes and returns the forms for the upcoming census. Sioux City Census office manager Karen Borchers says they want anyone living in the city to fill out the forms regardless of their residency status.Everyone living in the city benefits from federal dollars doled out based on the census figures.Borchers says there’s some concern that information on illegal aliens may be turned over to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. She says that won’t happen. She says census workers would get into serious trouble if they reveal information included on the census forms.Sioux City has a large Asian and Hispanic population. Officials are hoping the census bumps the Sioux City area up to the 100-thousand population figure. Officials says that mark would make the city more attractive to certain types of businesses.
