Students hit the road to see play

March 6, 2000 By admin

Hundreds of students from across the state are road-tripping to Des Moines today to see a Shakespearean classic. At least 34 schools are sending buses to the only Iowa performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by the Minneapolis-based Guthrie Theatre troupe. One teacher says it’s not a chore to get her students to read Shakespeare’s 400-year-old plays. Sandy Christ teaches English at Clear Lake High School and is bringing a busload of students who range from 8th grade to seniors in high school. She says the tales William Shakespeare wove are timeless. Christ believes the works of William Shakespeare should be a staple part of every child’s education.Today’s matinee is at 1 p-m with evening performances at 7:30 tonight and tomorrow night at the Des Moines Civic Center.
