Warner returning to Iowa this weekend

March 23, 2000 By admin

The Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross in Waterloo is hoping Kurt Warner’s success on the football field will help them set a record for fundraising this weekend. Warner finished this season as the N-F-L and Superbowl M-V-P, but Red Cross spokesman Tom Tierney says Warner helped with fundraising long before he hit it big in football. Warner will sign autographs at the Don Denkinger Sports Spectacular Saturday. The sports show is named after the former major league baseball umpire and Waterloo native. Tierney says the Red Cross has been involved in a lot of disasters in the past year.He says much of the money raised this weekend will help people who aren’t involved in the so-called major disasters. For example, he says they help many people who were left homeless by a fire.Tierney says they hope to raise 50-thousand dollars this weekend. Tickets for the autograph session for Warner are sold out. Tiernery says tickets remain for a silent auction and banquet Saturday night. He says Denkinger has done a lot to secure items from sports stars for the silent auction.
