Iowa senators split on flag desecration amendment

March 29, 2000 By admin

Iowa’s two U-S Senators will cancel out each other’s votes today on a Constitutional amendment to protect the American flag from desecration. While republican Chuck Grassley says he’ll vote in favor of the amendment, democrat Tom Harkin plans to vote against it. Harkin says it’s not just about protecting the flag, it’s protecting the Bill of Rights. He says he doesn’t doubt the sincerity and motivation of those pushing for the amendment. But Harkin says those pushing for the amendment don’t love the flag any more than he does.Harkin says there really aren’t many cases of people burning or otherwise desecrating the American flag.Harkin says he recently saw a letter from retired General Colin Powell who was urging the Senate NOT to pass the proposed Constitutional amendment.
