Iowa State opens spring football drills

March 29, 2000 By admin

The Iowa State football team opens spring practice today in Ames. Cyclone coach Dan McCarney has an experienced team with 17-starters off last year’s 4-7 outfit and says everyone is ready to hit the field.McCarney says the spring is when most of the position battles take place. He says it’s probably more fun for the coaches than the players. McCarney says they have the most good players in camp than they’ve had in a long time.On offense, the Cyclones will need to find a replacement for Darren Davis at running back. He says Enis Haywood is the leading candidate.McCarney says the Cyclones need to improve their kicking game and improve their turnover ratio and those types of things have gotten attention during the off season. The Cyclones will close out spring drills on April 22nd with an intrasquad game.
