Program seeks environmentally friendly lawns

April 8, 2000 By admin

Iowans can have healthy green lawns without using chemicals, according to an organizer of today’s “Ecological Lawn and Garden Fair” in Waterloo. Kamyar Enshayan is a physics professor at the University of Northern Iowa. He also helps run the “Yards for Kids” project and says the goal is to get people to reduce their dependence on lawn herbicides to keep exposure of children to the chemicals to a minimum. The Yards for Kids program was designed by the U-N-I Center for Energy and Environmental Education. Professor Enshayan says Iowans can easily eliminate their use of herbicides and pesticides and still have a good-looking yard.Enshayan says Iowans need to learn about the simple ways they can keep their yards lush and green without the use of chemicals, which may cause health or environmental problems.Today’s fair runs from 9 a-m until 3 p-m at the National Cattle Congress in Waterloo.
