Grassley skeptical of congressional visit to Iraq

April 18, 2000 By admin

As a member of Congress visits Iraq this week, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s not fully supportive of the effort by Representative Tony Hall. Grassley, a republican, says the Ohio democrat is well-meaning in his trip that’s exploring the effect of U-N sanctions on the Iraqi people. He says there is some danger involved and the trip may lend some credability to Saddam Hussein.Even though it may undermine U-S efforts in the Persian Gulf, Grassley says Hall is a “great humanitarian” who has a “love for people in need.” Some 200 Iowa Air National Guard members are due home tomorrow night after a month-long mission of flying patrols over the northern no-fly zone of Iraq.
