Lawmakers honor ISU frat for turnaround

April 21, 2000 By admin

Legislators have honored an Iowa State University fraternity for a turn-around. Representative Rosemary Thompson, a republican from Marion, says just over a year ago, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at I-S-U was known as “The Animal House.”Thompson says binge drinking and bad behavior landed S-A-E members dead last among Iowa State fraternities when judging academic performance. A group of S-A-Es decided to turn things around and now ranks near the top in academic performance.Thompson and House Speaker Brent Siegrist presented the chapter’s sponsor and three student officers with a certificate of recognition.Thomspon says she wanted to reward the students for doing the right thing. The Iowa State S-A-E chapter was honored yesterday at the statehouse in Des Moines.
