"Roland Rocket" to enter High School Hall of Fame

May 2, 2000 By admin

Former Iowa State All-American basketball player Gary Thompson is one of 14 individuals who will be inducted into the National High School Sports Hall of Fame. Thompson says when he looks at the list of people who’ve been inducted, it’s a great honor. The “Roland Rocket” led tiny Roland High School from 1950 to 1953 at a time when there were no classes in the state high school tournament. In his sophomore season, Roland beat Waterloo West and Des Moines East in the state tournament before falling to mighty Davenport High in the state title game. Had there been classes in the early ’50s, Thompson believes his Roland teams would not have caught the eye of the state like they did.Two other competitors who will be inducted on July 8th are former Boston Celtic great Kevin McHale and former track star Steve Prefontaine
