The insurance folks who underwrite policies are urging Iowans to conduct a home inventory. Dan Crew is a spokesman for the “Iowa Chapter of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters.” He says having a list of all your property makes it much easier to know what you need to replace.Crew says you should keep receipts and warranties on the things you own and you should have some sort of home inventory stored in a fire safe or safety deposit box. He says that will keep the inventory safe for reference if there is a fire. There have been a number of fires in Iowa recently, including one last week in West Des Moines which put 60 apartment-dwellers on the street. Many of those folks did not have renters insurance, which Crew says costs about 10-dollars a month. He says it’s the cheapest form of insurance you can get.Crew works for E-M-C Insurance, a Des Moines-based company which has seen a “slight” increase in the number of “home-owner” fires so far this year.
