A section of Highway 63 in southern Iowa, near Eddyville, was closed this morning after authorities discovered hazardous materials in a ditch. Paul Degeest is the chief sheriff’s deputy in Mahaska County. He says two, 30-gallon cardboard barrels were discovered along the highway. Degeest says Eddyville Fire Fighters couldn’t tell what substance they were dealing with, so Ottumwa’s Hazardous Materials Team was called in. Tests were conducted. He says the material was found to be toxic and flammable.Degeest says the crystal-like substance was not illegal drugs, but they’re still not sure what it was. Deputy Degeest says the highway was closed for about two-and-a-half hours as crews worked to clean up the site.
